MATTER by Matter — Kickstarter.

# THE PROBLEM

The web is the future of journalism, but let’s be honest: the future isn’t living up to expectations. Newspapers and magazines have cut back on in-depth reporting. Gossip sites have proliferated. The web has become a byword for fast and cheap. Why isn’t it synonymous with fearless, investigative and enthralling writing?

We think it can be.

We’ve developed a way to support independent, global, in-depth reporting about science and technology, two subjects that are close to our hearts. We’re going to use it to build MATTER, the new home for the best journalism about the future. And we need you to help us make it happen.

# HOW WILL IT WORK?

MATTER will focus on doing one thing, and doing it exceptionally well. Every week, we will publish a single piece of top-tier long-form journalism about big issues in technology and science. That means no cheap reviews, no snarky opinion pieces, no top ten lists. Just one unmissable story.

MATTER is about brilliant ideas from all around the world, whether they come from professors at MIT or the minds of mad people. But most of all, it’s about getting amazing investigative reporters to tell compelling stories.

We’re building MATTER for readers, not advertisers. So however you access our stories — whether it’s on our website, via the Kindle store, or on your Apple and Android devices — you will get a beautifully designed experience that puts you first.

Good journalism isn’t cheap: it takes time and money for great reporters to do their best work. That means we’re going to have to charge. But not much: we’re aiming for around 99 cents per story. It’s an experiment to see if independent journalism, done right, can fill the gap left by mainstream media.

# WHO ARE WE?

MATTER is run by two experienced reporters with a passion for making journalism better.

Jim Giles is an award-winning writer whose credits include Nature, The Atlantic, The Economist and New Scientist.

Bobbie Johnson is European editor at GigaOM and a former technology correspondent for The Guardian.  His work has appeared in outlets from the BBC and Businessweek to The New York Times.

We’re not alone. We’ve lined up a team of writers and editors who have written best-selling books and produced fantastic writing for the world’s best publications, from The New Yorker and Wired to National Geographic and The Washington Post.

# JOIN IN

We need your help to build our site and commission the first three pieces. We think you’ll love the stories we have lined up: gripping exposes of online crime, untold tales of environmental threats, inside stories about revolutionary technologies and exclusive reports from the most controversial research labs.

To help us get them out into the world, you can pledge anything — from the cost of a movie ticket all the way up to a $3,000 sponsorship.

And for just $25, you can help us commission pieces by joining our editorial board. We’ll manage the board using All Our Ideas, a tool developed at Princeton and funded by Google. It has never been used in this way before, so you’ll be joining an experiment in collaborative commissioning as well as supporting top-quality investigations.

We’d love it if you pledged. We’d love it if you told your friends. We’d love if it you helped us build a new way to produce top-tier journalism. Because we think these things matter — and we hope you do too.

The HuMn Wallet – the best minimal RFID blocking wallet by Scott Hussa — Kickstarter

Why humans need a better wallet…

The HuMn Wallet was born out of necessity and lots of traveling. Being two dudes on the go, we’ve tried almost every type of wallet, money clip, card case, and wallet mutation out there. We were looking for a way to keep what we needed in our wallets, while getting rid of the things we didn’t. Sounds simple enough right? Wrong.

Some card cases could hold cash and cards, but couldn’t hold business cards. Some could handle cash and business cards, but stored them on top of each other, which meant that you had to pull out all of your cards to find the one you were looking for. Others simply could only hold a fixed number of cards and cash.

All of the wallets we tried had a common problem, while they might start out “looking” slim, they would take on the usual bloated appearance once we put our cards and cash in them. It didn’t matter if it was cheap or expensive ,they all fell short in one way or another. To make things worse, almost all of the wallets out there didn’t even protect against RFID skimming.

Redundancy up the Yin Yang…

Most people don’t wear suspenders and a belt at the same time, because it looks silly and more importantly, it’s a bit redundant. Yet that’s exactly what quite a few of our friends do when carrying credit cards and money. We have friends who carry a card case and a wallet, or a money clip and a wallet, or a credit card case, a business card case, and… (wait for it)… a wallet. With smartphones capable of storing pictures, contacts, and holding information, it seems the fate of most wallets is to become a graveyard for old receipts more than anything else.

So here’s the rub…

We wanted a wallet that:

  • is lightweight
  • protects against RFID skimming
  • adapts to the user, not the user having to adapt to it
  • works for right and left handed people
  • is low profile
  • is minimally designed
  • can handle any climate and environment
  • will never wear out
  • allows easy access to cash, credit and business cards
  • wouldn’t turn into just another portable receipt holder
  • wouldn’t be limited to a fixed number of cards you could carry

It had to do all these things and still have a design that was minimal and looked amazing!

Humans deserve a better quality wallet…

We’ve spent the last 11 months obsessing over this project to get it just right. Through endless tinkering with different types of materials and dimensions we’ve been able to distill what we believe a modern wallet should be.

From the steel fastener and super durable flat elastic shock strap we’re using to secure the plates together; to incorporating an expanded aluminum mesh that blocks radio frequency signals in our carbon fiber plates, it was important to us to make sure that we were putting in your hands the most ergonomic and cleanest looking wallet you’ve ever laid your eyes on.

Quipsologies

Quipsologies.

Dedicated to the most curious and creative of design projects, UnderConsideration’s Quipsologies is an essential source of inspiration for those designers who pride themselves on thinking outside the box.

Quipsologies is a daily stream — during the work week, we must rest after all — of bite-sized posts chronicling the most curious, creative, and notable projects, stories, and events of the graphic design industry. The majority of the Quips come from us, Armin and Bryony, while regular contributors and reader submissions fill in the rest of the content.

Every month is a new volume, and every volume starts with Quip No. 1. There is no hardcore philosophy about this structure, it all started in 2005 with the original Vol. 1 when Quipsologies were housed within the now retired, Speak Up. After 93 weeks, worth 28 volumes, we launchedQuipsologies as a spin-off from Speak Up in January of 2007, resetting the volume counter back to 1. After almost three years we thought we could push Quipsologies a little bit more and this incarnation picks up on Vol. 45, September 2010.

You can recommend Quips through the handy form to the left and if you feel like you would like to contribute on a regular basis we are always looking for Quipsologists.
